Cancer Deaths are on the Decline

The American Cancer Society says prevention efforts are working and medicine is getting better at treating cancer. The latest report from the organization shows that cancer rates continue to decline in the United States. Research shows that almost 1 million cancer deaths have been prevented in the last 20 years.

The cancer study compared statistics on deaths between 1990 and 2007 which is the latest year for which data is available. Over that period of time, the cancer death rate declined by just over 20% for men and by almost 15% for women. The discrepancy between the decline for men and women has directly to do with smoking. The Cancer Society says research shows that women have been slower to give up cigarettes than men and that is why their cancer death rate is not falling as fast.

One area where great progress has been made in cancer deaths among women is breast cancer. The campaigns which push early detection are clearly having positive results. Breast cancer is still the number two cause of cancer deaths among women but the number of deaths has been steadily declining by about 3% per year since 1990. The new cancer study shows that prevention efforts are the key to reducing cancer death rates even more. There comes a time in our lives when the chores of daily living become just get too much for us. Include Strength Training as Part of Your Exercise Program

When most adults think of starting an exercise program, they generally think about activities such as jogging, swimming, or doing aerobics. Rarely do they think about strength training. But strength training is just as vital as jogging or swimming activities.

The American College of sports Medicine and the American heart Association suggest that individuals participate in at least two non-consecutive days of the week in some form of strength training activities. You should include 8 to 10 strength exercises that focus on the major muscle groups: abdomen, arms, back, legs, shoulders, and chest. Strength training requires you to exert a force against a resistance through a functional range of motion.

You do not need to work out in the weight room to do strength training or buy expensive weight lifting equipment. Instead, use an inexpensive elastic exercise band which can be found in many stores. Use it in the privacy of your own home to exercise your core muscles.

Bicycle. Loop the elastic exercise band and tie a square knot. The loop should be about a foot in diameter. Lay on your back. Place the loop around your feet. Put your hands behind your head. Stretch your left leg out. Bring your right knee up and touch it to your left elbow. Keeping a slow, controlled movement, straighten your right leg, bring your left knee up and touch your right elbow.

Curls. Step on the middle of the band with both feet. Hold the ends of the band with an underhand grip with your hands to your sides and your palms facing forward. Keep elbows close to your body and pull the band up to your shoulder. Return to starting position. Repeat the motion keeping your back and head straight throughout the movement. Only your elbow joint should move.

Wood chop. Hook the band underneath a heavy piece of furniture. Stand to one side of where the band is hooked. Grasp the exercise band and pull it up and away in a wood chopping motion. Keep your feet stationary and rotate at your trunk. Repeat this motion in the opposite direction.
